Miami Art Basel
What makes Miami Art Basel so special?
Maimi Art Basel is the biggest fair for Contemporary and post War Art in Northern America. The beginning of December attracts the best galleries from all over the globe to the Eat Coast to show their best piece of art. Founded in Basel, Switzerland, now the fair has 3 official locations and is hold 3 times a year in Hong Kong (March), Basel(June) and Miami(December). . It is quite difficult to acquire one of the few coveted gallery spaces that meet the expectations of Art Basel’s prestige. For a week Miami become an epicenter of the Art Scene with the help of International Fair Art Basel, where you can see unique canvases by Willem de Kooning, Damien Hirst, Dan Flavin, Donald Judd, Do Ho Suh, SAM Francis, Pollock to name a few. Willem de Kooning's seated woman is estimated ~135 million dollars and currently belongs to a private collector. This work was publicly displayed at the Basel for the visitors to enjoy.
As I mentioned earlier Art Basel is only the tip of the iceberg. Art Basel is next to Miami Design fair with endless amount of design stores, which carry curated collections of designer furniture and accessories
But what will be Miami without a beach?
As you guessed there are a few fairs right on the beach. You literally have to walk on the sand to enter them. The few fairs I saw first even before Art Basel where Untitled and Scope, jogging on the beach. Gildar Gallery might of converted me into a pink lover with their stylish pastel booth at the Untitled art fair. As a part of Art Miami Untitled Art Fair is located right at the beach with a number of new galleries and emerging artists exhibiting. I found it interesting that Andrew Jensdotter ( 2 pink canvases) creates his work by painting a number of pictures by old masters and then he carves into the surface of it and created his on mark.
*Stunning work by Andrew Jensdotter, Dmitri Obergfell and Amber Cobb
Finaly, Miami Art Fair which is located on the main land right across from the Perez Museum. From my point of view, Art Miami Is focused more on emerging and living artists. There are lots of more affordable works of art( we are talking thousands of dollars instead of millions). So many playful and clever peces
Miami know how to create buzz around: endless public installations and parties. I was under an impression that art event was on every corner. Faena hotel was the best place to be during the fair. Somehow Faena was able to host an American Express private lounge and Miami ice cream museum and a dozen installation inside and outside the hotel.
